Glasgow Rangers are reportedly interested in bringing Jon Flanagan to Ibrox this summer.

According to a report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in signing Jon Flanagan on a free transfer and a deal could potentially pave the way for James Tavernier to leave Ibrox amid £3.5 million links with the Premier League and Championship.

Selling Tavernier would be a major gamble from the Gers this summer. The right-back has arguably been one of the club’s most reliable performers over the last few years and has established himself as a leader amongst the group, having worn the captain’s armband on a number of occasions last season.

The Scottish Sun’s suggestions that Tavernier may be available for £3.5 million may perhaps alarm some Rangers supporters, but perhaps it would prove to be a very decent piece of business if the Light Blues managed to replace the Englishman with Flanagan.

From a football perspective, the 25-year-old could be a very shrewd signing for the Gers given that he is now available for nothing following the end of his contract at Liverpool.

At one stage, Flanagan arguably looked destined to become a mainstay of a Liverpool side that was threatening to win the Premier League. He made 23 league appearances during the year that Brendan Rodgers and Gerrard took the Reds to the brink of winning the title.

Steven Gerrard is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

With the Daily Record reporting that Gerrard believes that he can get the full-back’s career back on track, it could prove to be a fantastic signing for the Light Blues if the Gers boss can bring the best out of him.

And if they end up doing the two deals at a profit of £3.5 million – though it could certainly be argued that they should be looking for more than that for Tavernier – then perhaps it could prove to be a very good bit of business indeed.
