Glasgow Rangers defender Danny Wilson has been linked with the Ibrox exit this month.
Had Rangers fans been asked at the start of the season whether they would be particularly upset if Danny Wilson left Ibrox, it seems highly likely that many of the supporters would have suggested that his departure would not be a particularly devastating loss by any means.
Fast forward to this window, and The Scottish Sun is now reporting that the centre-back is a target for some Major League Soccer sides as he enters the final months of his Rangers contract.
And while that news may not have seemed that disappointing in the summer, it is surely now fair to say that Graeme Murty would be making a big mistake if he did not do everything he could to keep the 26-year-old in his squad past next week’s deadline.
Wilson may not go down as the most gifted defender Rangers have had but it could certainly be argued that he has probably been the club’s best centre-back since Murty began his second spell as manager and he returned to the fold after being a peripheral figure under Pedro Caixinha, especially since Ross McCrorie has moved slightly further forward into holding midfield.
And with David Bates out of contract in the summer, and currently attracting interest from elsewhere (via Daily Record), as is Bruno Alves (via Daily Record), while Russell Martin is only at Ibrox on loan for the rest of the season, there is potentially a situation on the horizon when Murty may have to rebuild the majority of his defence.
Therefore, keeping Wilson ahead of what may perhaps be a period of transition surely has to be a priority for the Gers right now. Not stopping him leaving would surely go down as a mistake.
