Glasgow Rangers have received a huge boost with the news that James Tavernier has signed a new deal at Ibrox.

After a brilliant run of form this season, James Tavernier has provided Rangers fans with the news that they had been waiting for ever since they realised that the right-back’s contract was gradually edging towards its conclusion.

The 26-year-old has signed a new deal that is set to keep him at Ibrox until the summer of 2021, and he celebrated the fresh terms by telling the club’s official website just how far he wants to go with the Gers.

James Tavernier of Rangers controls the ball during the Betfred League Cup Quarter Final at Firhill Stadium on September 19, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“I want to win the league. If we can go for the Treble I want to win the Treble,” he told the club’s official website.

“I want to aim high and be playing in the Champions League, so this club has got the capability to do that. It’s got the fans behind us all the way, it’s down to the players to push really hard to get to that point.”

With Rangers facing a battle trying to finish second in the Scottish Premiership this term – 11 points back of the current league leaders – and looking for their first trophy since the season where they clinched promotion from the second tier, it is certainly an ambitious challenge that has been laid down by the defender.

Therefore, Tavernier’s comments should arguably convince Rangers to step up the levels of ambition that they are currently showing in the transfer market.

Of course, Rangers acting cautiously when targeting players makes a lot of sense given that they are still working their way back towards the level that they were at before their financial implosion. But Tavernier’s comments about wanting to win the domestic treble and to get back into the Champions League should act as a warning.

Rangers are starting to put a squad together made up of a number of players who seem to have the quality to guide them to major honours if further ambition is shown in the market and they are able to land some more players of a similar calibre.

But they may perhaps face a race against time to make sure that they start to show to the likes of James Tavernier and Alfredo Morelos that they have every intention of using the transfer market to take the squad to the next level that will allow their squad to realise those lofty ambitions.
