Glasgow Rangers should attempt to bring Billy Gilmour back to Ibrox on loan this summer.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Scottish Premier League match between Rangers and Hibernian at Ibrox Stadium on May 05, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Steven Gerrard’s decision to tell a number of players that their time at Rangers is up is a welcome one, with the Gers squad looking incredibly bloated heading into the new season.

The Scottish Sun named five players who have been told that they are free to leave, and three of those players – Jordan Rossiter, Jason Holt and Graham Dorrans – are all midfielders.

It is in the middle of the park where Rangers have boasted the most depth during Gerrard’s tenure. But the move to offload a number of fringe players could leave Gerrard needing to make another signing or two before the new campaign starts.

And perhaps one player that Gerrard should consider is Billy Gilmour, with Football London reporting that Chelsea are planning to loan the 18-year-old out to a Championship club for the coming season.

Despite never making a first-team appearance for the Gers, Gilmour’s move from Ibrox to Chelsea was one that left a large number of fans feeling incredibly disappointed. And his form for the Blues’ youngsters has only added to that anguish.

But if he is ready to be loaned out, Rangers should have a look at bringing the 18-year-old back for one more season in the hope that he can provide a little more flair and magic to the ranks. He will still be a raw talent, but Ryan Kent proved last season just how devastating those players can be when everything clicks.

His versatility means that he could increase the depth in a number of areas. And if Gerrard is prepared to give him game-time, Chelsea should have no qualms about sending him to the Scottish Premiership, again, after seeing the transformation Kent has enjoyed.

With his senior debut still around the corner, it would be not quite right to suggest that Gilmour has unfinished business with Rangers. But a season-long loan would give the dazzling starlet the chance to enjoy a more satisfactory end to his Ibrox career.
