Should Rangers go after the Aston Villa man, six years after first wanting him?
Glenn Whelan joined Aston Villa on Thursday in a development which might edge Mile Jedinak closer to the exit door in the West Midlands.
If the Australia international is available, Rangers should enquire.
Rangers were, according to Sky Sports, leading the race for his signature way back in 2011, though the ex-Crystal Palace midifelder wound up joining the Eagles instead.
But the 32-year-old midfielder – who turns 33 in August – might be deemed surplus to requirements following the arrival of Whelan, who plays in a similar position.
Rangers boss Pedro Caixinha needs somebody of that mould, after letting Andy Halliday leave on loan. Of course, Ryan Jack has been signed but Jedinak, with his experience, is an upgrade on the 25-year-old and could be a key figure, even at 32.
They need leaders, evident by their shock defeat to Progres Niederkorn, and although they have 95-cap Portugal defender Bruno Alves, another strong character would not go amiss.
Can they afford him? Well, he cost £4 million last summer, but an up-and-down seasons with the Villans, combined with his age, mean that they won’t recoup that fee.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Bruce won’t want to lose him, but if he is available then Rangers could and should pick up where they left off six years ago.
