Rangers duo Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso have failed to make a positive impact at Ibrox.

One of the first things on top of the to-do list for Pedro Caixinha’s successor at Rangers will be to create a shortlist of centre-backs that can be signed in January.

Portuguese duo Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso have been way below par since joining the Gers this summer, as they struggle to adapt to the fast-paced, physical Scottish Premiership.

A facial injury sustained by Cardoso has seen teenager Ross McCrorie come into the fold, and the 19-year-old is now expected to keep his place in the side alongside Alves when Cardoso retains his fitness.

However, the January transfer window should see the Gers enter the market for a new centre-back and Hibernian ace Paul Hanlon should be sitting pretty at the top of any shortlist Rangers’ next manager draws up.

Only four of Caixinha’s 11 summer signings were from British clubs, and targeting players with Scottish Premiership experience should be one of the first traits the Gers new boss looks for.

Hanlon, 27, has played 173 times in Scotland’s top tier and knows just how to deal with the style of football north of the border, offering pace and physicality in equal measure.

A sense of leadership is also key to Hanlon’s performances, captaining Neil Lennon’s side twice this season during his 14 league and cup appearances.

His quality has finally been recognised by Scotland, as interim boss Malky Mackay has selected the no-nonsense defender for Scotland’s friendly against the Netherland on November 9 alongside Gers midfielder Ryan Jack.

Having a player that can control the back line for Rangers and give out orders throughout a match, as well as being able to speak the language, is absolutely vital. Twin that with Hanlon’s obvious quality and experience, he would be the perfect signing at Ibrox to replace either Alves or Cardoso.
