Rangers desperately need midfield additions at Ibrox in January.
Another Ryan Jack suspension has highlighted Rangers’ need for a new central midfielder in the January transfer market, as Graeme Murty continues to adopt an effective diamond formation.
The system incorporates four central midfield players, with Jason Holt, Ryan Jack and Ross McCrorie all shining under Murty since the 43-year-old stepped in to replace Pedro Caixinha.
However, Scotland international Jack’s suspensions, along with long-term injuries to Jordan Rossiter and Graham Dorrans has seen Murty forced to use the likes of youngster Jamie Barjonas and the ageing Niko Kranjcar.
Murty needs a central midfield player that fits the mould required; a tough-tackling central midfielder that boasts the technical ability and quality to prise open an opponents’ defence – much like Jack or Dorrans.
HITC Sport reported on Thursday that English Championship club Sheffield United are interested in Middlesbrough’s Adam Clayton, as he remains out of favour on Teesside.
But surely the 28-year-old would be the perfect addition to Murty’s Rangers revival at Ibrox, as he is in the peak of his career while his playing style is surely suited to thriving in the Scottish Premiership.
It is believed that Middlesbrough, who have recently sacked Garry Monk and replaced him with Tony Pulis, could be willing to send the former Leeds United and Manchester City midfielder out on loan.
With the Gers lacking significant transfer funds, Clayton should be signed on a temporary basis in a move that would not only benefit the Light Blues’ wallet but also their chances of remaining competitive behind Celtic during the second half of the 2017-18 campaign.
