Rangers should rethink Alfredo Morelos sale with Jermain Defoe linked

Glasgow Rangers could reportedly sign Jermain Defoe on loan and let Alfredo Morelos leave Ibrox this summer.

Despite all of the optimism amongst the Rangers fans following Steven Gerrard’s appointment, there is no question that the Gers need a significant overhaul right across the squad after a disappointing campaign where they only briefly threatened to set up a title race in the Scottish Premiership.

One of the positions where Rangers undoubtedly need to make changes is up front. Alfredo Morelos threatened to enjoy a stunning first season, but his form tailed off dramatically during the latter stages of the campaign, and now it is possible that he may have played his final game for the club.

The Scottish Sun recently reported that Rangers would listen to offers for the 21-year-old, who scored once following the end of February. And given the incredible reports that Jermain Defoe is a target for Gerrard, it would appear that the new manager may prefer not to rely on the Colombian as his first-choice goalscorer next season.

The Scottish Sun reports that Rangers are eyeing a season-long loan for the Bournemouth striker who currently earns £65,000-a-week at the Vitality Stadium. And if the Light Blues manage to pull off the stunning deal, it would appear that Morelos may struggle for minutes next season.

But rather than sell Morelos, perhaps the best thing Rangers could do is keep the youngster as Defoe’s understudy as it could arguably help transform him.

Defoe is one of the most lethal Premier League goalscorers ever, and continues to find the back of the net despite the fact that he is a few months away from his 36th birthday. There is surely no better player for Morelos to learn from.

If Defoe can pass on half of the wisdom that he has, Morelos should come out of next season as a significantly better striker – even if he barely plays competitive football.

And given that Rangers fans have seen just how good Morelos can be when he is on form, it becomes a frightening thought to imagine how dangerous he could become if he develops a more consistent game and adds some of Defoe’s ruthless edge in front of goal.

Morelos’ form during the second-half of this past season makes Rangers’ willingness to sell understandable. But if they land Defoe, perhaps their preference should be to take a gamble and hold onto the starlet for a while longer.
