Rangers should remain keen on Jordan Jones after praise for Gerrard

Rangers were linked with a move to bring Jordan Jones to Ibrox.

Rangers were busy in the summer transfer market, but Steven Gerrard’s men should already be preparing for the January transfer window too.

15 summer signings – including four centre backs, three midfielders and three strikers – arrived at Ibrox this summer, with Gerrard and director of football Mark Allen completely overhauling the Rangers squad.

Rangers also brought in three wingers this summer, as Jamie Murphy made his move permanent before Ryan Kent arrived from Liverpool, and when Murphy suffered a season-ending knee injury, Albanian Eros Grezda was brought in.

With Kent only on loan from Liverpool, Rangers may still need to consider other wingers in January or at the end of the season, with Jordan Jones one option.

The Express reported last month that Rangers were considering Jones when Murphy suffered his injury, and whilst they went with Grezda in the end, Jones should stay on the radar.

The Kilmarnock star has impressed since a 2016 move from Middlesbrough, providing pace and creativity out wide whilst becoming one of Scottish football’s top talents.

Jones is an international teammate of Gareth McAuley and Kyle Lafferty, meaning a move to Ibrox would surely be appealing to the wide man, whilst he has even praised Gerrard this week.

Speaking to The Scottish Sun, Jones admitted that being linked with Rangers twice – including a failed bid earlier this year – was ‘mental torture’, but he praised the impact Gerrard has had on Scottish football since arriving at Ibrox, and his name-checking of the Gers boss suggests that he would be interested in working with the ex-Liverpool man.

“It’s a really good time for Scottish football as a whole. There are a lot of good managers here, like our gaffer,” said Jones. “Steven Gerrard has brought a lot of publicity to the game and he has done really well with Rangers so far. So it’s a good time to be involved and the game is definitely on the up,” he added.

With Rangers previously keen on Jones and the winger himself talking up Gerrard, it may be wise for the Gers to keep him on their radar ahead of 2019 and potentially eyeing him as a Kent replacement down the line.
