It was reported by the Daily Express earlier this week that Steven Gerrard has his eye on four new signings for his Rangers squad in January, with a new midfielder on his wishlist.

The Gers have made a very promising start to life under Gerrard, but it is probably not a surprise that he still wants a cluster of signings in the winter with the results and some of the performances proving to be slightly more underwhelming in recent weeks.

Nevertheless, Rangers wanting a new midfielder is a slightly surprising move given that Gerrard has a fantastic option awaiting his second chance at Ibrox.

Greg Docherty is enjoying a superb loan spell with Shrewsbury. He currently sits at the top of their goalscoring and assist charts in League One and there are plenty of Gers fans who would love to see the youngster make an early return to Ibrox.

Greg Docherty of Rangers is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

If Rangers have the option to recall Docherty in January, then Gerrard must surely consider taking up that chance rather than looking to sign a midfielder from elsewhere.

He is high on confidence right now and that may tempt some to suggest to leave him where he is. But a new signing could push him down the pecking order if he does end up seeing out his loan spell and returning in the summer.

Docherty has done what Gerrard needed to see from him and he arguably deserves the chance to prove that he is now ready to really make the grade with his boyhood club.
