Nottingham Forest defender Eric Lichaj is reportedly attracting plenty of interest as contract talks continue with Mark Warburton’s side, but should Rangers enter the race to lure the defender to Ibrox?
The Nottingham Post claim two Championship sides are after the 29-year-old defender, who can play anywhere in defence while MLS sides are also said to be keen in bringing him back to his home country.
The former Aston Villa and Leeds United defender is currently in the final year of his contract at the City Ground, and although talks are ongoing over a new contract, interest remains high in the tough-tackling ace.
It should convince Rangers to raid former manager Warburton’s side to add the defender to their ranks in order to provide competition for James Tavernier at right-back, with Lee Hodson largely out of favour in Glasgow.
Northern Ireland international Hodson has been afforded just 287 minutes of Scottish Premiership action this season under both Pedro Caixinha and Graeme Murty, with just 18 months remaining on the former MK Dons man’s contract.
Lichaj boasts a wealth of Championship experience with Forest as well as Leeds, and provide cover across the Rangers back line with Danny Wilson and David Bates’ future at Ibrox yet to be decided as their contracts end in May.
The 13-time USA international is known for his aggression in defence and his tenacity could be crucial in further plugging the leak at the back and simultaneously striking fear into Scottish Premiership attackers.
Forest have already done business with Rangers this season, signing Barrie McKay from Ibrox and now the Gers should get their own back by tempting Lichaj to move north in a move that would bring the best out of first-choice right-back Tavernier.
