Glasgow Rangers have been linked with targeting a deal for Louis Moult, so perhaps the Ibrox side should pursue a loan bid for another striker.

According to a recent report from The Scottish Sun, Rangers are interested in signing Louis Moult from Motherwell, who will be out of contract come the end of the season.

The Gers may well be keen on signing the striker outright during the next window, but if the asking price puts them off then perhaps they should consider offering him a pre-contract deal and turn to a surprise deadline day target to try and fill the void until the end of the campaign.

According to the Daily Mail’s live transfer feed (31st August 2017; 10:57 am), Rangers asked about whether they could potentially do a deal for Aston Villa striker Ross McCormack, who has endured a largely miserable time since joining the Villans.

McCormack obviously did not move to Ibrox before the deadline, but perhaps Pedro Caixinha should not give up hope of signing him and should instead look to make a loan bid in January that would see the Scotsman return to Ibrox until the summer.

The 31-year-old arrived at Villa for £12 million in 2016, as reported by BBC Sport, so it would surely be out of the question to suggest that a permanent move may be possible unless Steve Bruce’s men are feeling particularly generous.

But a loan move may suit all parties if McCormack remains on the fringes of the Villa squad over the coming months, as it will allow Rangers to land a striker of excellent quality, give McCormack the chance to get some confidence back and allow Villa to either put him in the shop window – if they want to let him go permanently – or look at his form and consider whether to give him another chance.

A potential deal for the former Fulham man would see Rangers add some much-needed depth to their striker options for the second-half of the season, and that will be especially beneficial if they manage to sign Moult but only on a pre-contract deal.

And with his stock arguably extremely low currently, McCormack may relish the chance to return to familiar surroundings for a few months as it may boost his chances of earning a fresh start – whether that be at Villa or elsewhere.
