Rangers are lacking speed in their side despite a huge influx of players this summer.

For Rangers next manager, adding pace to his side in January must be at the top of his transfer priorities after Pedro Caixinha failed to bring in any kind of first-team speed to Ibrox during the summer.

Out wide, Josh Windass and Daniel Candeias have remained the Gers’ first-choice wingers, but neither are known for their quickness – more so their creativity and invention when in possession.

Strikers Alfredo Morelos and Eduardo Herrera thrive off having balls to attack when in the penalty area, and signing a winger that can beat a full-back and reach the byline would see either striker become a lot more prolific.

Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley sold his stake in Rangers this summer, but the connections between the two clubs are still fresh and that could help the Gers look to land one of the Toon’s up-and-coming stars.

Rolando Aarons, 21, told the Evening Chronicle on Tuesday night that he is becoming frustrated at a lack of game time at St. James’ Park, and refused to rule out a move away from Newcastle in January.

Offering bags of pace and trickery, the Toon academy product has an eye for goal and has proven just that in the Premier League with two goals in 14 games against Tottenham and Crystal Palace.

Now fully fit after an injury-plagued 2016-17 season, speed machine Aarons needs first-team football in order to continue his development, and a loan spell to Rangers would benefit all parties involved.

Combining with former Newcastle teammate James Tavernier on the right flank at Ibrox could be the secret weapon Rangers need to push on and close in on Old Firm rivals Celtic, as well as leapfrogging Aberdeen and Hibernian.
