Mark Warburton would do well to bring the Australian, who nearly joined Rangers on trial in 2013, to Ibrox.

Back in 2013 Rangers were looking closely at the potential signature of talented Australian goalkeeper Mathew Ryan.

The young Australian, then playing his football for Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, was all set to head to Glasgow for a trial but, as reported by the BBC, decided to pull the plug on the move at the last minute.

It was claimed he decided to do so as Rangers could not tell him what league they would be playing in the following season.

Rangers were of course playing in the Scottish League One at the time and it seems Ryan was not keen on lower-league football.

Since then Ryan joined Belgian side Club Brugge, excelled in Belgium, and joined Spanish side Valencia in 2015.

But he has not found it easy in Spain and is currently wasting away on the bench at the Mestalla.

So should Mark Warburton consider a loan move for the keeper?

Wes Foderingham and Matthew Gilks are good goalkeeping options but Ryan, he is of a different class.

Rangers could benefit from his excellent distribution and shot-stopping ability and he could be a first-class option between the sticks at Ibrox.

His wages might be an issue, but Rangers could certainly do a deal.

If he was a hit and Rangers also qualified for a European competition in the summer, he might even become a permanent option.

If Rangers want to show some ambition, they should revisit this failed 2013 target and perhaps give themselves the best keeper in the Scottish Premiership.
