Glasgow Rangers brought Joe Worrall to Ibrox on a season-long loan deal in the summer.

While some Rangers fans may still have their concerns about Joe Worrall, there is no question that Steven Gerrard views the summer signing as an important member of his squad.

The 21-year-old has made 16 appearances for the Gers in all competitions and spent a decent portion of the season as Gerrard’s first-choice centre-back alongside Connor Goldson.

The Daily Mirror reported earlier this month on its live transfer blog (5/12; 10:36) that Gerrard plans to reject any attempt by his parent club Nottingham Forest to recall the defender in January.

But perhaps the Gers now need to monitor events at the City Ground as there appears to be the possibility that Rangers may have to fight a little harder to keep the youngster for the second-half of the season.

Nottingham Forest manager Aitor Karanka looks on at Pride Park Stadium on December 17, 2018 in Derby, England.

The Daily Mail has reported that the Forest owner is ‘seriously considering’ sacking Aitor Karanka after their run without a win extended to four games on Boxing Day despite having a 3-0 lead over Norwich at one stage.

Should Karanka get the boot before the end of next month, the new manager may want to consider all of the possible options available to him, perhaps including Worrall.

Joe Worrall of Rangers looks on prior to the UEFA Europa League Group G match between Rangers and Villarreal CF at Ibrox Stadium on November 29, 2018 in Glasgow, United Kingdom.

There were plenty of Forest fans left confused when the defender was given the green light to leave on loan, so bringing him back may be a popular step if a new man comes in.

So while some of the Ibrox faithful may not be too disappointed if he heads back to the Championship side next month, Gerrard may want to consider monitoring the situation surrounding Karanka’s future closely in case he soon has to think about replacing the summer signing.
