Rangers should do everything within their power to bring the Celtic-linked star to Ibrox this summer.

Former Juventus centre-back Martin Caceres will be available on a free transfer this summer, after his contract with Southampton expires.

The Uruguayan has already been linked with a move to Scottish champions Celtic, according to the Sun, but it is their arch rivals Rangers who would benefit more from signing the 30-year-old.

This summer will be a vitally important one for Pedro Caixinha, as he looks to close the gap on Brendan Rodgers’ side, and despite the acquisition of Bruno Alves, the addition of another experienced centre-back would not go a miss.

And Caceres could be just the man for the job.

He has all the attributes required to succeed in the Scottish Premiership. He is tenacious, strong in the tackle, quick along the ground, and possesses a wonderful football brain.

His CV within the game is impressive to say the least, and includes five Serie A titles, a La Liga title and a Champions League winning medal.

The main stumbling block involving the Gers moving for the 68-capped Uruguay international will be surrounding his wage demands. The Mirror reported in February that he was on a £100,000 per week contract at Southampton, so there will obviously have to be some kind of compromise made, if he is to make the move to Ibrox.

The other problem could be that a move to Parkhead might just be more appealing, what with the Champions League football on offer, but Caixinha could tempt Caceres into choosing Rangers instead with the offer of guaranteed first-team football.

With such a huge gulf in class between the two Glasgow giants, it will take the signings of players such as Caceres to help Rangers begin next season on more of an even playing field.

Although it seems like a long shot, it will most certainly be worth a try, and it could be the start of something special at Ibrox.
