Rangers were linked with bringing Martin Skrtel to Ibrox over the summer.
Rangers brought in 15 signings over the summer, but they will end up being in the market for more defenders at the end of the season.
The Gers landed Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic before then snapping up Joe Worrall on loan from Nottingham Forest and free agent Gareth McAuley.
Already though, Rangers need to have one eye on next summer, given that Worrall will be heading back to Forest, and veteran McAuley will be out of contract.
That would leave Rangers with Goldson and Katic, and an experienced centre back to replace McAuley should certainly be in mind for boss Steven Gerrard.
One key name linked over the summer as Gerrard’s former Liverpool teammate Martin Skrtel, as The Sun reported that a £2.7million deal for the Fenerbahce ace was close, but it never went through.
Skrtel has played on in Turkey, but he is out of contract at the end of the season – and Rangers should be back in for the Slovakian in 2019.
The giant centre back, 33, has the experience that Rangers would need in place of McAuley, and his history with Gerrard may just make a reunion hugely appealing.
Skrtel can sign a pre-contract agreement, and with Rangers knowing that McAuley and Worrall will be departing Ibrox come the end of the season, it would be smart for Gerrard to launch a move to sign Skrtel in 2019 and add a proven star to his back four.
