Glasgow Rangers are reportedly keen on signing Jack Marriott, but that should not stop the Ibrox side targeting Jason Cummings on a permanent basis.

Rangers fans would be forgiven for feeling extremely excited after Sky Sports reported on Wednesday that the Gers are keen on signing Jack Marriott after his stunning season in League One.

According to Sky Sports, Rangers are amongst a trio of sides interested in landing the 23-year-old striker who has scored 33 goals in all competitions for Peterborough this season.

The Light Blues getting something done would undoubtedly be a huge statement from the Scottish Premiership side, but even if they do manage to sign Marriott, the Gers should still take a serious look at making Jason Cummings’ loan switch permanent.

The Daily Record reported earlier this year that Nottingham Forest will have to be paid £1 million if Rangers want to keep Cummings beyond this season. And while he has not exactly captured the imagination since arriving, it seems to be something of a no-brainer to consider paying the seven-figure fee.

Cummings has not been at his best since joining on loan, but he is unquestionably a huge asset to have amongst the squad. His passion and willingness to battle has the potential to inspire his teammates when the chips are down, and there have been glimpses of his quality in front of goal since his arrival.

With Alfredo Morelos proving inconsistent in recent months, Steven Gerrard is right to have his eye on potential additions who can give the Gers more depth and quality going forward.

Marriott would be a fantastic signing if he is able to build on his incredible campaign, and if Morelos keeps developing then the pair could elevate Rangers significantly. But with question marks seemingly lingering over both of those possibilities happening, perhaps spending £1 million and taking a gamble on Cummings would still be a wise move.
