Rangers should join PL trio in race for Dundee star Hendry

Rangers desperately need a new centre-back at Ibrox and Dundee’s Jack Hendry should be on top of their list.

Rangers must throw their hat into the reported race to sign Dundee defender Jack Hendry with a trio of Premier League clubs chasing the Scottish Premiership ace, as David Bates and Danny Wilson’s future remain in doubt.

The Daily Mail claims Newcastle, Southampton and Crystal Palace are monitoring the 22-year-old as he continues to impress north of the border, after Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers labelled him as “excellent”.

Dundee boss Neil McCann signed Hendry from English side Wigan Athletic in the summer and the Glasgow-born ace has shone north of the border, starring in every single Scottish Premiership appearance for the Dark Blues.

Known for his pace at the back, Hendry has helped Dundee climb off the foot of the Scottish Premiership table by excelling in wins over Rangers last month as well as victories against Ross County, Hearts and St. Johnstone.

Dundee are in desperate need for cash and could be willing to sell Hendry if they can make a significant profit on their rising star, with a meeting scheduled this week to discuss his future.

Wilson and Bates are both in the latter months of their current contract at Ibrox, with new deals yet to be in the offing despite the duo combining to help the Gers brush aside Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon at Pittodrie.

Rangers could have an upper hand in the race to sign the former MK Dons, Shrewsbury Town and Partick Thistle defender as they would be able to hand Dundee’s number 22 first-team assurances – something the interested PL trio cannot.

Former manager Pedro Caixinha brought in a number of foreign stars such as Eduardo Herrera, Carlos Pena and Fabio Cardoso this summer, and adding a player that fully understands the rivalries synonymous with Scottish football is crucial.

Born in Glasgow, Hendry understands exactly that and would be a major coup if the Gers can enter the race and land the defender ahead of the likes of Southampton and Newcastle.
