Steven Gerrard needs the centre-back at Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.

It’s now or never for Rangers in regards to Craig Halkett.

The 23-year-old defender was linked to Rangers back in December [The Scottish Sun], having been released by the Gers under Mark Warburton in 2016.

He has become a Premiership regular with Livingston but, according to The Edinburgh Evening News, Halkett is set to sign a pre-contract agreement with Hearts.

Clearly the Ibrox outfit made a bit of a mistake by releasing him for free three years ago, but it isn’t too late to correct it by hijacking the Jambos’ reported interest.

Not only is he a boyhood Rangers supporter, but Halkett will feel like he has a point to prove and he might well jump at the chance to return.

Does Steven Gerrard actually need him?

By virtue of the fact that the light Blues lost 2-0 in a Scottish Cup quarter-final last night and look like ending the season without a trophy, let’s just say that Gerrard isn’t flush with brilliant centre-backs.

Connor Goldson is inconsistent. Joe Worrall belongs to Nottingham Forest – and is inconsistent. Gareth McAuley is 40 in December.

A move for Halkett certainly wouldn’t be amiss, but time is of the essence if reports today are accurate.
