Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers should fancy their chances of John McGinn after the Celtic boss inadvertently suggested he didn’t need him.
When John McGinn scored twice for Hibernian against Celtic in September the consensus was that he was Scott Brown’s long-term successor at Parkhead.
Comparisons with the Celtic captain have been plentiful since and, rather inevitably, speculation is rife that Brendan Rodgers wants the 23-year-old as Brown’s replacement.
The Daily Mail reported on Monday that the Hoops were indeed keen, but Rangers should absolutely take an interest on the back of what Rodgers said on Tuesday.
The Northern Irishman, speaking to The Record, touted Eboue Kouassi as the man to take over the midfield mantle from Brown one day and if Rodgers believes that then surely there is no need to sign McGinn, worth around £4 million according to The Sun.
The Hibs star has been earning rave reviews for the Easter Road club this season and if his next club is going to be Scottish then it makes more sense for that to be Rangers, based on what the Celtic manager has said.
West Ham United have been linked, but David Moyes has gone on record as saying that he wants midfielders with Premier League experience, which rules out McGinn.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that Rodgers is interested in McGinn, and simply talked up Kouassi – who has played six Premiership games since joining 12 months ago – to avoid an admission that the 20-year-old hasn’t impressed as much as they expected him to.
But £3 million was spent on bringing the Ivorian midfielder to Glasgow, which means they are going to persevere with him and Rangers could and should nip in ahead of them for McGinn.
