Rangers go up against Motherwell at Ibrox on Wednesday night.
Rangers boss Graeme Murty will already be feeling the pressure at Ibrox after being handed the job until the end of the season, following two successive defeats to St. Johnstone and Kilmarnock.
Whispers of a Scottish Premiership title race have been all but obliterated following the Gers’ two losses, as they now sit 14 points behind Old Firm rivals Celtic in third place – although they do have a game in hand.
That game in hand will be played tonight, as the Gers play host to Motherwell at Ibrox and Murty must make a number of changes to his side if they are to earn all three points against Stephen Robinson’s Well.
The 43-year-old manager earned wins against Hibernian and Aberdeen twice over with the use of a diamond formation, which should see Murty bring mainstay Ryan Jack back into his starting line-up.
The Gers’ number eight has been criticised for his lack of discipline, but his combative nature and box-to-box playing style are just the tools Rangers need in the middle of the park.
To convert the system into a diamond, Murty must drop the disappointing Lee Hodson who surprisingly started last time out, allowing Declan John to play on the left flank.
Although new permanent signing John impressed from the left, scoring his third of the season, he should revert to the left side of defence and Jack should come in for 26-year-old Hodson.
That would allow Murty to use Ross McCrorie at the base of a diamond, with Jason Holt and Jack ahead of the teenager and the choice of Daniel Candeias, Jamie Barjonas or Carlos Pena for the number 10 role.
But dropping Hodson and reverting to a diamond are key if Murty wants to earn a seventh victory in charge of the Glasgow club.
