Rangers need a new defender as David Bates looks set to leave Ibrox.
Nottingham Forest defender Jack Hobbs is set to leave the County Ground at the end of the season and new Rangers manager Steven Gerrard should consider a reunion at Ibrox.
Hobbs, 29, is expected to leave Forest this summer with his contract set to expire on June 30, after featuring just seven times in all competitions for the two-time European champions this summer.
Set to be available on a free, Rangers should consider a move to land the commanding centre-back who would solve what could turn out to be a problem area at the heart of their defence this summer.
Doubts remain over the future of Portuguese duo Bruno Alves and Fabio Cardoso as they remain on the fringes of the Rangers starting line-up, while David Bates has signed a pre-contract agreement with German side Hamburg.
Russell Martin only remains on loan at Ibrox, leaving the club with only Ross McCrorie at centre-back though the youngster has recently shown that he is a much better option in the middle of the park.
Gerrard’s highest priority in the transfer window must be to solve the problem position at Ibrox and landing a centre-back on the cheap would be the perfect remedy.
With an experienced leader such as Hobbs, who has 229 appearances at Championship level, Rangers would certainly sure up their defensive inconsistency at the back and take a step closer to clawing Celtic back.
But what could prove most beneficial to the Gers in signing Hobbs would be a reunion with Gerrard, a player with whom Gerrard shared the pitch in Liverpool red three times – twice in the Premier League and once in the EFL Cup in 2007.
Reuniting the duo could provide a huge boost to morale and understanding between the two, making Hobbs an excellent addition at Ibrox.
