Right-back Alan Hutton played enough for Aston Villa last season to trigger a one-year contract extension.
But the Scotland international – who turns 33 in November – might be tempted to leave Villa if the right offer from the right club came in.
His long-term future is not at Villa Park. Next season could be his last in the West Midlands, and James Bree’s emergence last term means that he might not feature heavily.
So, should Rangers intervene and offer him a chance to come home?
Hutton joined Rangers as a 16-year-old in 2000 and left Ibrox to join Tottenham for £9 million (via The Record) in 2008.
Within a month of leaving he was back at Ibrox, but this time as a fan, and later said to The Record: “I still love the club and you never know where I’ll end up later in my career – I might find myself back at Ibrox one day.”
He clearly has an affinity for the club and although his return might not go down well with some Gers fans, the Glasgow giants could do with him.
Hutton enjoyed a good season with Aston Villa last season and even at 32 he is a better right-back option than the erratic James Tavernier, who struggled last season.
With his contract set to expire next summer, Rangers would not have to break the bank to get him and it is a move which Pedro Caixinha should certainly consider.
