Glasgow Rangers appear to have hit a stumbling block in their attempts to bring Jack Simpson to Ibrox, so perhaps they should switch their focus.

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Pre-Season Friendly match between Rangers and Wigan Athletic at Ibrox Stadium on July 29, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers appear to now be in a position where Steven Gerrard only needs to apply the finishing touches to his squad during the transfer window after an incredibly busy summer at Ibrox which has seen a raft of players arrive and seemingly strengthen the Gers side significantly.

One area that Gerrard has looked to add further depth to is centre-back, with the Daily Record reporting that Bournemouth’s Jack Simpson has been a loan target for the club as they look for further support for the likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic.

Unfortunately for Rangers however, it does appear that Simpson will not be heading to Ibrox this summer, with Cherries boss Eddie Howe suggesting, in comments reported by the Record, that he does not have the numbers in his ranks to allow any more players to leave.

With the Premier League deadline passing, it appears that Rangers may have to accept defeat when it comes to Simpson. But perhaps that could open the door for the club to pursue an even better target.

The Gers should now have a serious look at trying to sign Krystian Bielik from Arsenal. The youngster is much more established at senior level than Simpson, having enjoyed loan spells with the likes of Birmingham City and Walsall. He has also made a couple of appearances for the Gunners’ first-team.

Bielik is not only capable of playing at centre-back, but he can also play slightly further forward in a holding role. Rangers have a lot of options in midfield, but that versatility would still be a plus for Gerrard as it becomes more difficult to sign players.

The 20-year-old is able to play out from the back so would probably be more than comfortable providing cover for the likes of Goldson and Katic, and would arguably be a much safer option for the Gers than Simpson who is a little more unproven.

It is not ideal to sign another player on loan when the club already have a handful of players in on temporary deals, but the Arsenal youngster is a very promising talent who could prove to be an inspired signing if he did arrive for the coming campaign.
