Rangers-owned Greg Docherty is thriving away from Ibrox.
Rangers loaned midfielder Greg Docherty out to Shrewsbury Town this past summer in order to help him develop with more game time – and that move appears to be working perfectly.
A January signing for Graeme Murty having starred at Hamilton Academical, Docherty featured regularly under Murty but then saw Steven Gerrard bring in three midfielders in Scott Arfield, Lassana Coulibaly and Ovie Ejaria.
That pushed Docherty down the pecking order at Ibrox, and rather than sit around at Ibrox waiting for the odd opportunity here and there, Rangers loaned him out to Shrewsbury in League One.
It hasn’t exactly been the best season for the Shrews, but Docherty has developed into a real goalscoring midfielder in Shropshire, hitting five goals in 18 games so far this term.
The latest goal came last night, as Shrewsbury beat Salford City 3-1 in the FA Cup, and Docherty scored a stunning solo goal, beating one man on the right before smashing high into the net from a tight angle.
Rangers showed that they haven’t forgotten about Docherty, reacting to the video of his goal by praising him for a superb finish, before Rangers coach Michael Beale joined in.
Beale, who followed Gerrard to Ibrox this past summer, applauded Docherty for his latest goal – and Rangers must at least be considering bringing him back to Glasgow in January.
