Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers let Jason Holt leave on loan yesterday.

Jason Holt of Rangers scores during the Scottish Championship match between Hibernian and Rangers at Easter Road on April 20, 2016 in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rangers announced on Monday that Jason Holt has left the club on loan.

The 25-year-old has joined up with former Rangers team-mate Joey Barton, who has signed him for Fleetwood Town for the 2018-19 campaign.

Some fans of the Ibrox club were disappointed to see Holt leave, but it makes total sense.

The former Scotland Under-21 international is a central midfielder and, well, he stood no chance of playing regularly under Steven Gerrard next season.

Gerrard has Scott Arfield, Jordan Rossiter, Graham Dorrans, Ryan Jack, Greg Docherty and Andy Halliday.

Holt, who cost £65,000 when Mark Warburton brought him to Ibrox in 2015 [The Record], is a tidy player, but would he really have been able to compete with those players for a starting berth? Probably not.

By the time he returns, Holt will still have a year to go on his contract in Glasgow and a season under Barton down South could do him the world of good. He could, in theory, impress with the League One side and then return to the Gers and impress Gerrard this time next year, but for now, he wasn’t good enough.
