Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson has confirmed that the Light Blues will head off to a European training camp over the summer as they prepare to defend their Scottish Premiership title.

The Ibrox side will be presented with the league trophy for the first time in a decade when they face Aberdeen on May 15 before Steven Gerrard and his players head off for a well-earned rest.

However, Wilson has detailed how the club’s preparation for pre-season is “virtually complete” with the Gers still awaiting approval from the Scottish FA to train abroad.

If that doesn’t materialise, there is a back-up plan at a UK-based camp while there is also a slate of friendlies lined up, including the July clash with Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal to mark the club’s 150th anniversary.

Wilson is hopeful that fans will be allowed in to see Rangers in action against the Gunners, with current restrictions being eased and gates set to be unlocked from May 17.

“Our pre-season plan is virtually complete,” Wilson told Rangers TV. “We will announce things in the coming weeks as soon as we have approval from everybody we need to have approval from.

“We are very focused on a training camp in Europe at a venue Steven [Gerrard] knows well and is somewhere we’d be delighted to take the team to start our preparations.

“Obviously the Scottish FA removed permission for training camps overseas so we need that permission to return which I’m sure it will.

“If not we’ll have a back up plan in the UK as well.

“But we are delighted with the plan we have got in place and we’ve then got a series of fixtures as well.

“The Arsenal one is a fantastic one for us but it’s quite an exciting pre-season both from a football perspective and for the fans as well to hopefully be allowed to follow us around again.

“For them to be back at Ibrox with us and create that energy that the fans always create around the Rangers team but we’re really happy that at the start of April the pre-season plan is already mostly boxed off.”
