Rangers want Ross Stewart and have made the Sunderland man their top striking target this summer as Giovanni van Bronckhorst chases Ibrox additions.

The Gers came up short in the Europa League final against Eintracht Frankfurt and also lost the Scottish Premiership title to Celtic.

Van Bronckhorst will need key additions this summer in order to take Rangers forward and a shot of players have been linked.

A striker will be paramount and whilst Mateo Cassierra has been a prominent name, Rangers could look a little closer to home.

Rangers want Ross Stewart

Reports from The Northern Echo in April suggested that Rangers had joined the race to sign Sunderland striker Stewart.

The former Celtic talent rose to prominence with Ross County and has now become a hero at Sunderland.

Stewart racked up 26 goals in 53 games this past season whilst also bagging five assists.

The 25-year-old has now picked up his first Scotland cap and is currently looking forward to a first Championship season.

Yet there could be a twist in the tale as Rangers have been eyeing him up after Sunderland director Kristjaan Speakman hailed him as ‘incredible’.

The Northern Echo now report that Rangers have made Stewart their top striking target this summer.

There are fears that Alfredo Morelos won’t sign a new deal and with his contract expiring in 2023, he could be sold this summer.

If Morelos leaves, it’s still hard to imagine that Rangers will go for Stewart; they may go for a little higher-profile striker to fill the Colombian’s place.

Rangers may still go for Stewart regardless though as the Gers need to find another centre forward to help Morelos and Kemar Roofe.

Stewart’s goalscoring form in England makes him appealing to Rangers but as far as a replacement for Morelos goes, we can’t really see that happening.
