Rangers want Ross Stewart in January but the Sunderland striker is believed to be financially out of reach for the Ibrox club.
That’s according to transfer insider Dean Jones, who has been speaking to Give Me Sport about the Sunderland hitman’s future.
Jones has suggested that an alleged £10million transfer fee is just beyond Rangers and they won’t be paying that for Stewart.
Jones does though believe that a move to Ibrox could become more realistic if Sunderland start to drop their demands for the striker.
“Rangers aren’t going to be spending £10million on him. That figure is out of reach,” said Jones. “If Sunderland insist on that being the fee, then it’s not going to happen. But if it starts to drop, it might become interesting,” he added.
Additionally, fellow transfer reporter Pete O’Rourke told Give Me Sport that Stewart is ‘definitely’ a deal Rangers would like to do in January.
Whether Sunderland are willing to sell at a price Rangers can afford is the big issue here.
Stewart is out of contract in the summer but Sunderland can activate a 12-month option, hence that high asking price.

Ross Stewart ticks boxes for Rangers
The Gers undoubtedly need to find another striker in 2023.
Antonio Colak has chipped in well with goals but Alfredo Morelos is out of contract in the summer and looks likely to leave.
Rangers simply must find another goal threat and Stewart will be an appealing option.
Stewart, 26, knows Scottish football having impressed during his time at Ross County.
Whilst fans saw promise in that spell, Stewart has taken his game to another level at Sunderland.
26 goals in 53 games last season was enormous as Sunderland won promotion, whilst he has also bagged seven goals in nine games this season.
Making that step up to the Championship shows that Stewart’s League One exploits weren’t just a bit of luck.
New Rangers boss Michael Beale has already outlined that he wants Rangers to sign Scottish players and Stewart makes perfect sense.
Tall, physical and with predatory instincts in front of goal, Stewart could slot into that Rangers attack – but it all depends on Sunderland’s demands.
