Rangers may not bring Ross Stewart to Ibrox but Sunderland may now face shock interest in their top striker from Olympiacos.

The Gers have a new manager in place with Michael Beale returning to Ibrox as Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s replacement.

Beale faces a tough battle closing the gap to Celtic and he will certainly need a couple of transfer window to refresh this Rangers squad.

Another striker may be wanted amid questions over Alfredo Morelos and his contract situation, but Ross Stewart rumours are a little mixed.

Rangers-linked Ross Stewart now wanted by Olympiacos

The Daily Record claim that Rangers are unlikely to go back in for Stewart in January having looked into signing him over the summer.

Rangers allegedly couldn’t agree a deal with Sunderland for Stewart and subsequently signed Antonio Colak instead.

The Morelos situation could change things but it looks like Rangers are now ready to move on from Stewart.

That’s great news for Sunderland but it’s hardly like the interest in his signature ends there.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon reports that Sunderland are expecting to receive interest in Stewart come January.

Greek giants Olympiacos have now joined the race for Stewart and could offer him a shock move in 2023.

Stewart is out of contract at the end of the season but Sunderland have an option to extend that deal by another year.

That seems likely to happen but Sunderland may yet receive an offer they can’t refuse during the January window.

Stewart, 26, has been an inspired signing for Sunderland since arriving from Ross County in January 2021.

The lanky striker smashed 24 goals in 46 league games last season, helping fire Sunderland to promotion from League One.

Stewart has suffered some injury blows this season but has still managed five goals and three assists in just seven league outings.

A striker who knows Scottish football maybe isn’t the worst idea for Rangers, but Stewart may be passed over by the Ibrox club as a move to Greece becomes possible.
