Rangers icon Richard Gough thinks Steven Gerrard’s back five will be the difference for the Light Blues in tomorrow’s Old Firm clash at Ibrox.
Celtic head to Ibrox looking to avoid ending the season trophyless for the first time in a decade and book their place in ext weekend’s quarter-finals against Clyde or St. Johnstone.
Gough compared the lack of “brilliant individuals” in the current squad to the likes of Brian Laudrup and Paul Gascoigne when the defender was in his pomp at Ibrox and thinks the settled defence the Gers have are key to their success this season.
“Steven Gerrard’s boys are just four games away from going through an entire league campaign unbeaten, which is something we couldn’t do,” Gough told the Daily Record.
“The current squad might not have the brilliant individuals we had but they are a proper team and it’s been a real collective effort from them. In recent years they had relied too much on Alfredo Morelos up front but now they’re chipping in with goals from everywhere and Alfredo’s not even the top scorer this season.
“The defence has been the key for me. It’s given them the platform to achieve everything and, barring injury or suspension, there’s been no tinkering with that back five whereas across the city they’ve chopped and changed right from the start, using three goalkeepers and constantly switching from a back three to a back four.”
