Rangers are reportedly attempting to lure defender Mexer to Ibrox.

Rangers clearly need some defensive reinforcements this summer – and one of Pedro Caixinha’s former signings could be arriving at Ibrox.

The Gers will see loanee Joe Worrall return to Nottingham Forest this summer, whilst veteran Gareth McAuley is out of contract and unlikely to receive a new deal.

That leaves Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic as the recognised centre backs at Rangers, so it’s no great surprise that Steven Gerrard is pushing hard for a new arrival.

The Daily Record report that Gerrard went to France on Thursday for talks with Rennes defender Mexer, in the hope that a personal meeting would help win the race for his signature.

Mexer, 30, is out of contract at the end of the season, so Rangers could land a freebie – and one who has a history with ex-Gers boss Caixinha.

The Mozambique international was in the Sporting ranks before Caixinha plucked him and signed him for Nacional back in 2012, making him a part of his back line before losing his job just three months later.

Rangers vies with Oliver manager Steven Gerrard is seen during the Ladbrokes Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park on March 31, 2019 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Rangers have been down the path of signing some of Caixinha’s favourite players in the past, such as Carlos Pena and Eduardo Herrera, and it didn’t really work.

They’ll now have to hope that Mexer – this time under Gerrard – would be a much better signing, and become the Rangers favourite that his former boss Caixinha hoped to become.
