Rangers reportedly retaining Louis Moult interest highlights Eduardo Herrera error

Rangers did not stump up enough money to convince Motherwell to sell Louis Moult in January – but are considering another approach in January.

Rangers’ decision to put their faith in unknown, foreign strikers this summer was certainly a major risk. And while Alfredo Morelos already looks an inspired addition, it’s fair to say the jury is still out with Eduardo Herrera.

According to the Daily Record, Rangers splashed out £1.2 million on the Mexican, who manager Pedro Caixinha managed during his spell at Santos Laguna. So far, however, the 29-year-old has hardly set the world alight, although he did get off the mark at the fourth attempt in last week’s 3-1 win at Ross County.

Yet, Rangers fans could be forgiven for wondering why they took such an expensive risk on Herrera rather than stumping up the sum required to take Louis Moult from Motherwell.

The Scottish Sun reports that Rangers were interested in the former Stoke City youth, who is a proven goalscorer in the top flight after netting 30 in the last two campaigns.

And he has maintained his one-in-two ratio by netting two goals in four games in the opening month of the 2017/18 campaign.

Therefore, it’s little surprise that the report adds that Rangers may make another move for Moult in January, where he may be available for slightly cheaper due to the fact his contract expires next summer.

Yet, although Rangers could save themselves a few pennies waiting around to bring Moult to Ibrox, the fact that they are in the market for a striker once again just weeks after paying big money for Herrera suggests Caixinha is less than convinced in the options at his disposal.
