Rangers have landed an exciting signing, as full back Calvin Bassey has joined the club from Leicester City.

The defender’s contract at Leicester was ending this summer. The Gers have now swooped in to land him on a pre-contract agreement.

Bassey has signed a four-year deal at Ibrox. Eligible for Italy, England and Nigeria, Bassey was tipped for a bright future at Leicester, but has now decided to leave for first-team football at Rangers.

The 20-year-old should have the chance to provide competition for Borna Barisic at left back. With Andy Halliday and Jon Flanagan both moving on this summer, Bassey can make the step up.

What makes this deal really impressive is the fee Rangers will be paying. The Daily Record note that Rangers are spending just £230,000 in compensation for Bassey.

Leicester allegedly valued Bassey at £3million, meaning Rangers are landing him for less than a tenth of the asking price. Bassey’s contract situation and cross-border rules mean Rangers have paid minimal compensation.

This isn’t the first time Rangers have pulled off such a deal. Back in 2016, Liverpool wanted £8million for midfielder Jordan Rossiter according to the Daily Mail. However, Rangers used these compensation loopholes to land him for just £250,000.

Rossiter’s career didn’t exactly pan out as Rangers wanted. They at least didn’t make a considerable outlay on the midfielder, and they have taken a similar approach to signing Bassey.

This is a bargain addition for Rangers, and they will hope that this time, their clever way of signing bargain talents will actually pay off.
