Rangers are reportedly close to completing their sixth January signing, according to the Sun.

Three players – Jermain Defoe, Steven Davis and Andy Firth – have already arrived at Ibrox this window, with two others – Glen Kamara and Jordan Jones – having agreed pre-contract deals.

And the newspaper reports that Rangers have now been granted a work permit for the recent Light Blues trialist, Matt Polster, around a month after he first linked up with Steven Gerrard’s side.

It adds, however, that Polster’s deal is still to be finalised, although the tallest hurdle appears to have been overcome.

The versatile United States international is out of contract after leaving Chicago Fire at the end of the North American season.

He is said to have caught the eye of Gerrard during his prospective new manager’s spell at Los Angeles Galaxy.

Polster’s capture could see Jordan Rossiter leave Rangers on loan, with several clubs reportedly keen.
