Rangers are reportedly closing in on the signing of Liverpool defender Jon Flanagan as Steven Gerrard raids his old club for a second time – and Gers fans will be interested to hear what Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish had to say back in 2011.

Sky Sports claim Flanagan, 25, is nearing a move to the Scottish giants after a medical took place on Wednesday, with the defender expected to join up with Gerrard’s side during pre-season training in Andalucia.

The one-time England international is available on a free after being released by Jurgen Klopp a year ahead of his contract’s expiry date.

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Flanagan played under Hoops icon Dalglish when the latter took charge of Liverpool for a brief period between 2011-12. Dalglish gave Flanagan his competitive senior debut, and described the defender as excellent.

As quoted back in April 2011 by the Liverpool Echo, Dalglish said on his display against City: “He did fantastic. He was playing against Manchester City, he was playing against an international in James Milner and he was never fazed.

“He just went out and played. He took one down early doors on his chest and passed it away and I think that settled him. He didn’t look fazed in any way, shape or form. It’s a fantastic credit to him that he did as well as he did.

“It’s also a reflection on the good work that’s being done at the Academy.”

Flanagan clocked up 51 appearances for Liverpool after his debut, but failed to break into the side on a regular basis. He was loaned to Premier League side Burnley, and then Championship outfit Bolton.

Rangers already boast James Tavernier at right-back – who is one of the front runners to be given the captaincy next season – but Flanagan would act as more than adequate cover at both right-back and indeed left-back.
