Rangers release statement, announce manager until end of year

Rangers have announced Graeme Murty will manage the Ibrox club until the end of 2017 at least.

Rangers have confirmed Graeme Murty will manage the club until the end of this year.

In a lengthy statement and unattributed on the club’s official website, it was claimed there was ‘no outstanding candidate’ who applied for the job, and Murty will continue in charge for the time being.

The statement read: “The chairman made it clear at the AGM that the club did not consider there to be an outstanding candidate among those who had applied for the position and the club was therefore considering managers currently under contract. This requires permission from their present clubs.

“We continue to consider candidates but will only appoint someone in whom we have full confidence and who feels he is ready for the job.

“In the meantime, we have great confidence in Graeme Murty, who will continue as interim manager at least until the end of the year. The manner in which he has approached this task is a credit to himself and the club.”

Rangers’ hopes of appointing Derek McInnes as manager had taken a serious blow this evening.

Aberdeen released a statement on their official website with McInnes insisting his goal is to remain at Aberdeen, and chairman Stewart Milne welcoming his decision.

Rangers had submitted an approach for McInnes days earlier, as they sought to replace Pedro Caixinha, who was fired in October.

Murty is Rangers’ under-20 coach but has stepped up to take first team duties for the second time this year.

He has recently presided over back to back victories over Derek McInnes’ Aberdeen.
