Glasgow Rangers fans are hoping Ibrox marksmen Morelos and Defoe can lead Steven Gerrard’s side to silverware this season.
Glasgow Rangers cult hero Alex Rae has spoken highly of Ibrox strikers Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe, believing their “rivalry” is healthy and enables them to feed off one another and keep standards high – resulting in plenty of goals (The Scotsman).
Between them, Morelos and Defoe have scored 15 goals this season, the former registering an especially impressive nine in only eight appearances, making Rangers a different beast to last season, when Kyle Lafferty and Umir Sadiq were the main strikers.
Steven Gerrard’s charges are going into Thursday night’s Europa League playoff game at Legia Warsaw on the back of five straight wins, and the optimism at Ibrox and amongst the Bears is the highest it’s been for a long time, especially when factoring in the issues and discontent over at the Old Firm rivals.
“I like the rivalry between Alfredo and Jermain and it is healthy when you have two strikers banging in the goals. The two of them are bouncing off each other and bring different elements to different games,” Rae told The Scotsman.
“If I was Morelos I would be looking to the example of Defoe and think there isn’t a better model pro about right now. Only Morelos can get a grasp on his temperament but the more good pros around you then they rub off on you. Rangers have the likes of [Steven] Davis, [Scott] Arfield, [Ryan] Jack and Defoe, as role models and leaders.”
Rangers embark on a busy 10 days ahead of the international break which sees them face Legia home and away on the Thursdays, with St Mirren away in the Scottish Premiership this coming Sunday, and next Sunday, just the small matter of the Old Firm derby.
