Rangers seek to continue their Europa League journey as they travel to face Willem II tomorrow night.
It was a competition Steven Gerrard’s side excelled in but they face a tricky trip for this one-off tie in Holland.
Injuries in midfield and forward areas limit Gerrard’s options for the match, and we’ve tried to predict the side he will send out in search of a win.
Perhaps one of the biggest selection dilemmas is in goal. Allan McGregor played in the previous round against Lincoln Red Imps, but John McLaughlin has played all the league matches.
We’ve got McGregor in here for the must-win match, who was described as ‘incredible’ by Gerrard back in November 2018, as per the Sun.
We expect James Tavernier, Borna Barisic and Conor Goldson back there, with Filip Helander rounding off the back four.
Fit again Leon Balogun could play, and it wouldn’t raise too many eyebrows, mind you.
Gerrard has already hinted at the identity of his midfield trio. Glen Kamara, Scott Arfield and Steven Davis are expected to take up those roles.
As per Glasgow Live, Gerrard said: “I thought our midfield were really good today. I need those three to be really big for me in the coming games.
That suggests the trio, who played against Hibernian on Sunday will play again here.
Ally McCoist: Rangers hero
- Lethal striker
Ally McCoist is best remembered for his spell as a Rangers player. He was a prolific striker, scoring 382 goals for the club. His best season came in 1991/92, when he netted 49 goals in a single season.
- Key part of Rangers’ success
McCoist’s goals helped Rangers enjoy sustained success. He won 10 league titles, and 10 domestic cups at Ibrox.
- Rangers’ darkest moment
McCoist stepped in as Rangers manager at the club’s darkest hour. Forced to restart in Scotland’s fourth tier, McCoist led Rangers to back-to-back promotions to begin their journey back to the Premiership.
In attack, Ianis Hagi and Ryan Kent look likely to play on the wings in the absence of Brandon Barker.
Kemar Roofe is also out injured, and we expect Alfredo Morelos to get the nod ahead of Jermain Defoe and Cedric Itten tomorrow night.
Morelos was Rangers’ top scorer in the Europa League last season and is now just one goal away from Ally McCoist’s record at the top marksman in European competition Rangers have ever had.
