Glasgow Rangers were reportedly hoping to bring Alex Gilliead to Ibrox on a free transfer.

According to a recent report from the Chronicle, Rangers were amongst the sides interested in signing Alex Gilliead this summer following his release from Newcastle United.

The Gers have been extremely busy during this window already with Steven Gerrard preparing for his first season in charge of the Scottish Premiership side. But despite the large number of signings, the squad still looks light in advanced areas of the pitch.

Most of Gerrard’s attention has been focused on strengthening the defence and midfield, so it is little surprise that he seems to now be focusing on adding to his options higher up.

And the Chronicle reported that one player that he had his eye on is Gilliead. However, Rangers appear to have missed out with Shrewsbury Town confirming today that they have signed the youngster.

It perhaps may not have been the most exciting deal that Rangers were going after this summer, but it could certainly be argued that it should be a disappointment for the Gers that they have missed out.

Gilliead may not have made the grade with Newcastle, but the 22-year-old boasts well over 100 career appearances from various loan spells. And he has been capable of providing goals and assists fairly regularly during those spells.

Steven Gerrard shakes hands with Dave King as he is unveiled as the new manager of Rangers football Club at Ibrox Stadium on May 4, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Initially, the right-winger would have been able to provide cover for Daniel Candeias, but he could potentially have been looking to push ahead of the Portuguese in the pecking order in the coming years.

And given that he can also play on the other flank or even as a forward if required, Gerrard may be reflecting on a missed opportunity now that Gilliead has made a decision on his future, even if a summer deal was never going to be one of their marquee acquisitions.
