Despite coming back from being a goal behind, Rangers will feel it was two points dropped against a 10-man Killie side.

A stunning 25-yard free-kick from James Tavernier gave Rangers a share of the spoils on Friday night after Kris Boyd gave Kilmarnock the lead against his former club.

Killie went down to 10 men in the second half when Greg Taylor was given a straight red for a shocking challenge on Joey Barton. And despite the visitors having a number of chances in the last quarter of an hour, a number of saves from Jamie MacDonald meant Kilmarnock were able to hang on to a point.

Player ratings

Wes Foderingham 6/10 – Didn’t really have a save to make in another steady performance in goal. New signing Matt Gilks will struggle for game time considering Foderingham’s reliability.

James Tavernier 8/10 – Up and down the right flank and a constant menace, the full-back was probably Rangers’ best player. Scored with a stunning free-kick that flew into the top corner, and could have had another but for a save from Macdonald.

Rob Kiernan 5/10 – Looked slow and positionally unaware. Will get found out against better opposition.

Clint Hill 4/10 – Did get found out. Lucky not to see a penalty given against him after an early handball. He was then outpaced by an ageing Kris Boyd as Killie went one up. Has bags of experience but offered very little.

Ross Wallace 6.5/10 – Took him until the second half before he bombarded the left flank. Very quiet in the first but gradually got better.

Jordan Rossister 5/10 – Ineffectual in a holding role and seems to be tussling with Barton for one position. The Liverpool graduate needs to kick on in his early Rangers career.

Joey Barton 6/10 – Like Rossister, hasn’t had the best of starts to his career at Ibrox. Drew the foul for a red card and didn’t complain. Perhaps should have had a penalty when he was tugged to the box.

Harry Forrester 6/10 – A lovely first chance and tried to create chances in a poor first half from his teammates. Plays to the final whistle in a gutsy manner.

Barrie McKay 6.5/10 – After going missing for the first half, the winger came into the game as he was switched to the left side in the second half. Threatened with a number of chances, but it was a little too late.

Joe Dodoo n/a – Injured after 14 minutes and therefore difficult to give a rating.

Kenny Miller 6/10 – Not his best performance, not his worst. With the growing number of options upfront for Rangers, he will have to play better.

Joe Garner 6/10 – Huffed and puffed but offered Rangers something different upfront. Needs to stamp the tendency to simulate out of his game though.

Niko Kranjcar 7/10 – Technically leaps and bounds ahead of everyone else on the pitch. Tried to create chances and is so calm on the ball. If fit, he has to start.

Andy Halliday 5/10 – On for 20 minutes but couldn’t provide the spark that Warburton and Rangers needed.
