Greg Docherty of Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers shone again for his loan club.

Rangers loanee Greg Docherty passed one of football’s best litmus tests on Tuesday night.

Docherty, on loan from Rangers at Shrewsbury Town, helped the League One side into the next round of the FA Cup.

But that isn’t the pertinent bit. The important thing is where it happened – the Brittania Stadium, now called The Bet365 Stadium.

Yep, the 22-year-old, who joined the Gers last January, has done it on a cold night away at Stoke – the same question that people ask about Lionel Messi.

The young midfielder was excellent throughout the 90 minutes and set up Josh Laurent for the winning goal as Town advanced into the fourth round during last night’s replay.

Despite the countless number of scintillating goals at the highest level and five Ballon d’Or crowns, it’s often wondered whether Messi would maintain his sky-high standard away to the Potters.

And in all likelyhood we’ll never know, but what we do know is that the Rangers talent has sent another big message to Steven Gerrard.

He probably won’t be recalled this month, but he has done everything he can so far to ensure he gets a crack at the whip in a blue shirt next summer.
