Rangers outcast Jason Holt would surely be tempted by Sheffield United return

Jason Holt has barely featured at Rangers this season but holds fond memories of his 2015 loan spell at Sheffield United.

You can hardly blame Jason Holt for admitting his frustration as he struggles to get used to a reduced role at Rangers.

The hard-working midfielder was one of the first names on the team-sheet when Pedro Caixinha replaced Mark Warburton in the final few months of last season but, after the manager brought in his own players over the summer, Holt’s action has been limited to 35 minutes of football in the Scottish Premiership.

“It’s been very frustrating, as it would be for any footballer but especially for myself as you just want to play games,” the 24-year-old told the club’s official website last week.

So what does the future hold? Caixinha has not been shy in getting rid of big names and experienced pros since arriving at Ibrox and, with Ryan Jack, Graham Dorrans, Niko Kranjcar and Carlos Pena all ahead of Holt in the pecking order, it would be no surprise if he became the latest senior man to leave.

But what chance of a return to England? Holt spent a successful loan spell at Sheffield United from Hearts in 2015, scoring five times in 16 League One fixtures for The Blades though the club decided against signing him permanently due to the talented youngsters already within the club’s ranks.

Before leaving, Holt stated; “If opportunities allow it, I’d have no hesitation playing for the club again”, per The Star. And perhaps Chris Wilder’s high-flying Blades could test Holt’s desire to return to Brammal Lane.

Sheffield United were left frustrated with their inability to land midfield reinforcements in the summer, John Lundstram the only addition despite attempting deals for West Ham wonderkid Domingos Quina and Southend United’s Ryan Leonard.

A deal for Holt, however, could be the best possible solution for all parties.
