Rangers fans still on a high from seeing their side clinch the Scottish Premiership for the first time in a decade were brought back to earth with a bump this week after reports emerged linking the Light Blues with a move for Sheffield United striker Oli McBurnie – and the Gers must steer well clear of a deal to bring the Scotland international to Ibrox.
According to the Daily Mail, Rangers would need to shell out as much as £15million, smashing the Scottish record of £12million the Light Blues spent on Tore Andre Flo.
That in itself makes the idea of Rangers landing McBurnie this summer seem pretty ridiculous – but it would also be a massive outlay for one area of the pitch the Gers aren’t exactly short of options.
With Kemar Roofe, Cedric Itten, Fashion Sakala, Alfredo Morelos and (maybe) Jermain Defoe, the last thing Rangers are likely to do is go and spend a massive chunk of the summer’s budget on a non-scoring striker.
McBurnie has only mustered a single goal from his 23 appearances in the Premier League this season before an injury saved Steve Clarke from having to axe him from the Scotland squad for this summer’s Euro 2020 finals.
Despite being a big Rangers fan and often taking to Twitter to praise players like Scott Arfield, there’s little other logic behind the reported link for the striker – with one Ibrox insider rubbishing the story on social media.
While it is clear the Gers will almost certainly be busy in the transfer market, a move to bring McBurnie to Ibrox would be a backwards step for Rangers and probably leave them with an over-priced striker who scores fewer goals than most of his team-mates.
