A former Rangers striker has sent a message of congratulations to one of his teammates, who signed for Steven Gerrard’s side on Friday.

Rangers confirmed the arrival of Tony Weston earlier, in doing so batting away competition from Everton, Southampton and Leeds United, according to The Blackpool Gazette.

Weston played alongside the Gers old boy Ryan Hardie at Blackpool last season, before Hardie joined Plymouth Argyle on loan.

And posting on Instagram after the teenager’s move, he wrote:

Weston is said to have rejected Blackpool’s offer of a professional contract to sign for Rangers in a £250,000 deal.

The forward, who will be 17 in September, played just a minute of senior football for the League One side.

He is expected to join Rangers’ development squad initially and could replace another young Englishman, Nathan Young-Coombes, who has been linked with a move to West Ham United.

Hardie is a boyhood Rangers fan who progressed through the Glasgow side’s academy system before leaving for Blackpool last summer.
