Glasgow Rangers midfielder Steven Davis is on loan at Ibrox until the end of the season.
It surprised many Rangers fans in the January transfer window when the Gers announced on their official website that Steven Davis had arrived on loan until the end of the season rather than signed on a permanent basis.
Sky Sports reports that Davis is out of contract at Southampton this summer, so a loan deal may have caught a lot of the Ibrox faithful off-guard.
However, it appeared that the agreement may have been a wise move from Rangers’ perspective as the Northern Ireland international struggled to break into the team and show his best form in his first weeks back in Glasgow.
But after helping Steven Gerrard’s side to back-to-back 3-0 wins last week, it is starting to become abundantly clear that Rangers cannot make any other decision than to extend the 34-year-old’s stay beyond this season.
Davis has reminded everyone of his quality in the last week. He was exceptional against Motherwell on Sunday, breaking up play with ease and looking so composed on the ball in the middle of the park.
It was the kind of performance that showed why it looked to be such a statement to bring Davis back during the last window. He may be coming towards the end of his career, but he has a lot still to offer.
And Gerrard must surely now be convinced that getting his future resolved is one of the first pieces of business that Rangers must conduct when the summer window opens.
