Rangers not selling Jordan Rossiter to Wigan now looks brilliant move

Glasgow Rangers were offered the chance to offload Jordan Rossiter after his torrid start to life at Ibrox.

It is quite easy to forget that Jordan Rossiter has actually been on Rangers’ books for two seasons given that he has made just six Scottish Premiership appearances for the Gers and played only 11 times in all competitions.

He has looked bright when he has been fit, but injuries have played a brutally-crucial role in his Ibrox career thus far. The amount of time on the sidelines meant that Rangers supporters would have been forgiven for wanting one outcome when he was linked with a move away during the most recent January transfer window.

The Daily Record reported at the start of the year that Wigan Athletic were keen on the Gers’ £250,000 signing, and Paul Cook felt that he may be able to land the 21-year-old for a bargain fee.

If an offer was made, it would not be a surprise if the Gers hierarchy considered the bid very seriously. But after seeing his return to the first-team for their final day clash with Hibernian, the Rangers board must now be delighted that they did not cash in on the youngster.

The Gers may have missed out on second place after playing out a 5-5 draw – a win for Aberdeen at Celtic meant that Rangers’ result was irrelevant anyway – but Rossiter was superb while he was on the pitch.

The former Liverpool ace looked dynamic in the middle of the park, not afraid to get stuck in – despite his problematic injury record – and bagged a very well-taken goal as Rangers put their incredible comeback together after falling 3-0 behind.

It is staggering that Rossiter was making his first first-team appearance since August at Easter Road, and it is an almost frightening prospect to imagine how good he could become once he has enjoyed a run of games – especially as he will be working under Steven Gerrard who will already know him very well.

Rossiter could surely have few complaints if, before his latest comeback, the majority of the Rangers fans had given up on him ever becoming a success at Ibrox. But after his latest appearance, the Ibrox faithful must be delighted that nothing came of the exit reports in January as his display suggested that the club could still have a star on their hands – if he stays fit.
