Ejaria is a versatile midfielder who can play in a box-to-box role.

Eight of his nine appearances on loan for Sunderland came in a central midfield position, according to whoscored.com, with one coming as an attacking midfielder.

This attacking role is the one where Gerrard feels Rangers will get the best out him.

Ejaria said: “I am a player who likes to be on the ball, I like to try and make things happen and I am comfortable on the ball.

“Hopefully if I work hard in pre-season then I will get my opportunities to show what I can do in the attacking midfield position. The manager has said that is where he sees me; as an attacking midfielder.”

Ejaria could be competing for that position with Josh Windass, who finished the 2017/18 season as Rangers’ second highest goalscorer.
