Glasgow Rangers brought Steven Davis back to Ibrox earlier this year.
Glasgow Rangers legend Nacho Novo has picked out Steven Davis as one of the key players for the Ibrox side this season as Steven Gerrard’s charges seek to challenge their Old Firm rivals for silverware according to the Daily Record.
The 34-year-old Northern Ireland international began his second spell at Rangers at the start of the year and made 18 appearances for them in all competitions in the season just gone, according to Transfermarkt.
Davis enjoyed a trophy-laden spell first time round at Rangers, having won three Scottish league titles, two Scottish Cups, three League Cups and reached the UEFA Cup final during his first stint at Ibrox – with Novo one of his teammates at the time.
Admittedly, Davis needed a while to find his feet after not getting as much game time as he would have liked at Southampton prior to his switch to north of the border, but Novo feels that, with a thorough pre-season under his belt, his ex-colleague can hit the ground running this season.
“Celtic have a bigger squad than Rangers so it’s a hard one but one of the key things for me this season is Steven Davis,” Novo told the Daily Record. “I know people were getting on his back at the start but I always believed in him and people realised by the end how good he is.
“It’s hard when players have hardly played for six months to come back and just turn it on again. I’m looking forward to seeing him from the start of the season and with a good pre-season under his belt. Steven Gerrard has a good squad but he just needs a bit more competition for places and he will know that.”
Rangers have a busy July, with Europa League qualifying games along with four friendlies at Ibrox, against Oxford United, Marseille, Blackburn Rovers and Derby County (official Rangers website), giving Davis and his teammates plenty of time to get fully up to scratch ahead of the return of domestic football.
